Why Should I Be Baptized?
One of the first steps of faith and obedience that you should take as a new believer (Christian, follower of Jesus) is to be water baptized. Jesus commanded us to be baptized (Matthew 28:18-20) and He was baptized Himself as an example for us (Matthew 3:13-17).
Water baptism is spiritually important and powerful for several reasons:
It is a public declaration, and celebration, of your personal decision to make Jesus your Lord and Savior (Romans 10:9-10).
It symbolizes that Jesus has saved you from your sins and that you have turned from your past to following Him (1 Peter 3:21).
Being immersed, or “buried”, in the water represents dying to your old way of living and severing the bonds of your sinful past; when you are immersed in the waters of baptism, you are announcing, “My former life of self-will and sin is being buried in these waters as though they are buried in a tomb.” Coming up out of the water represents resurrection – your new life God has given you in Christ (Romans 6:1-4).
It marks a definitive time, place, and moment in your life that reminds you of how much God loves you because you are His child and He is pleased with you (Matthew 3:17; John 1:12-13).
It allows you to receive everything that God wants to do in and through your life through the power and presence of His Spirit (Matthew 3:16).
